An executive magistrate of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Atish Darshi Chakma, was allegedly harassed by locals and traders in Uttara after allegations surfaced that bribes had been taken during an eviction drive.
Police later rescued him and took him to the police station.
However, no evidence was immediately available to substantiate the allegation that the executive magistrate had accepted a bribe.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Pakar Matha area of Sector 3 in Uttara.
According to traders, Atish Darshi Chakma launched a footpath eviction drive in the Pakar Matha area of Jasimuddin Road, accompanied by DNCC sanitation workers.
During the operation, several vendors alleged that an associate of the magistrate took Tk1,500 from a shopkeeper, reportedly promising to reduce the amount of the fine. They further claimed that the money was later recovered from the individual.
As tensions escalated over the allegation, local residents and traders became agitated, surrounded the magistrate and physically harassed him.
Upon receiving information, police from Uttara West Police Station rushed to the scene, brought the situation under control, and rescued the executive magistrate.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur said the DNCC executive magistrate had fined several individuals during the drive.
Police intervened after unrest broke out over the issue and brought the situation under control. Legal action is being initiated in connection with the incident, he added.
