A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted a six-day remand for former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled in a case filed over the murder of one Delwar Hossain in the capital’s Mirpur area during the July mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana approved the remand following a request by the investigation officer of the case Deputy Inspector Kafil Uddin of the Detective Branch (DB) police.
Earlier, the court had approved a five-day remand on 26 March.
During the hearing, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruki told the court that Sheikh Mamun Khaled was a trusted aide of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and had been involved in executing sensitive political operations, including the July movement, during which students were allegedly shot under his direction.
Faruki argued that the remand was essential for the continuation of the investigation. The defense, led by lawyer Morshed Shahin, opposed the remand and applied for bail.
Sheikh Mamun Khaled maintained his innocence in court, stating that he had spent his career as a teacher and had held responsibilities as Pro-Vice Chancellor.
He reportedly questioned how, as an educator, he could have ordered shootings on students and described the allegations as false. He further told the court that he had already undergone 120 hours of intensive questioning and implied that further interrogation was unnecessary.
After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defense, the court granted a six-day remand for Sheikh Mamun Khaled.
According to the case statement, Delowar Hossain, 40, joined a rally during the anti-discrimination student movement, in front of a fruit market in Mirpur-10 area on 19 July, 2024.
At that time, activists from Awami League-affiliated organsations, including the accused and several unidentified individuals, allegedly opened indiscriminate fire from multiple directions under the instructions of detained suspect Sheikh Mamun Khaled, using both local and foreign firearms in an attempt to disperse the peaceful protest.
Delowar was shot and taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on 21 July. His widow, Liza Akter, subsequently filed the case on 6 July, 2025.
Earlier, a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained Sheikh Mamun Khaled from his Mirpur DOHS residence on the night of 25 March.
He served as Director of the Counter-Intelligence Bureau (CIB) of DGFI during the final phase of the 2007-08 caretaker government. After the Awami League returned to power, he continued in the same position and later became DGFI Director General, holding the post from 2011 to 2013.
