Two officers-in-charge (OCs) of police stations in Chattogram have allegedly been threatened on Facebook by a former leader of the banned Chhatra League, following a series of recent arrests linked to violence and sabotage cases, police and officials said.

The accused, Nurul Azim Rony, former general secretary of the Chattogram city unit of Chhatra League and a member of the Awami League central sub-committee on youth and sports, is alleged to have posted a statement on Saturday morning warning OC Nur Hossain Mamun of Chandgaon Police Station and OC Aftab Uddin of Kotwali Police Station.

In the post, Rony reportedly wrote: “Chandgaon, Kotwali police station OCs, if your wives, children, or family members face trouble, don’t blame us.” Law enforcement officials have interpreted the statement as a threat against serving police officers and their families.

The allegation comes amid heightened police operations in Chattogram targeting individuals accused in cases of violence, political unrest, and sabotage.

On Friday evening, Chandgaon police arrested AKM Asifur Rahman Chowdhury, president of the Lohagara upazila unit of Chhatra League, during a special operation in the Chandgaon residential area. Police said he is named in multiple cases related to violence and sabotage linked to recent political unrest.

Earlier, on 25 April, Kotwali police arrested 12 leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League and the Awami League during operations across the city, citing concerns over planned processions and potential acts of sabotage.

Officials said the Facebook post allegedly followed these enforcement actions. Kotwali OC Aftab Uddin said the arrests may have triggered the online threat. “We are taking the matter seriously. The issue has been brought to the attention of senior officials. Legal steps will follow after investigation,” he said.

Attempts to reach Chandgaon OC Nur Hossain Mamun for comment were unsuccessful. Chattogram Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Media) Aminur Rashid said he was not immediately aware of the incident but confirmed that the matter would be looked into.

He added that police regularly monitor social media activity through a dedicated unit.

He also said that whereabouts of the accused were not being disclosed for operational reasons and that further details would emerge following investigation.

Police officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said incidents of online threats targeting law enforcement personnel have increased in recent months.

They added that while legal provisions exist to address such cases, action often depends on the identification and verification of evidence.

Authorities said the matter is under investigation.
