Mohammad Erfanul Haque has resigned as leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) to join the BNP.
He was the member secretary of the NCP Bandarban district committee and senior joint convener of the Chattogram city committee.
In a statement on Saturday night, Erfanul said the party had drifted away from the objectives of the July uprising, which led him to take the decision.
Despite the presence of many qualified local candidates for the Bandarban seat, the NCP nominated an unpopular outsider NGO worker, he said.
He added that the person was also selected as the candidate for the 10-party alliance, an action Erfanul described as a mark of disrespect towards the local residents.
Following his resignation, he confirmed his decision to join the BNP and said that he will actively campaign for BNP candidate Saching Prue Jeri.
His move follows the recent resignation of Mitrajoy Tanchangya, joint convener of the Rowangchhari upazila committee, who left the NCP only three days after assuming his responsibilities.
