Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Mia Golam Parwar has said the alliance of eight like-minded parties will continue its movement if a level playing field is not ensured ahead of the upcoming national election.
He made the remarks at a press conference on Sunday following a meeting of the top leaders of the eight parties at the Jamaat office in Dhaka’s Moghbazar.
Golam Parwar said the government “must become alert immediately”, warning that the neutrality of the election process could otherwise come under question.
He said partisan bias persists in many parts of the administration and claimed that the influence of the three advisers has further complicated the situation.
Referring to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s national address, he said the aspiration for the 13th parliamentary election had been “partially fulfilled”. “We are in the field because we want a fair election. If a level playing field is not ensured, the programmes of the eight parties will continue,” he said.
The Jamaat leader said the alliance’s three core demands remain unresolved. The demands include creation of a level playing field, justice for what he called the “perpetrators of fascism”, and removal of partisan bias within the administration. He added that the steering committee of the eight-party alliance would decide the next phase of their programme.
Urging citizens to vote “yes” in the referendum on the reform proposals, he said the alliance has supported the commission’s key reforms from the outset and stressed that these must be presented to voters in clear and simple language.
