BNP Standing Committee member and political adviser to the prime minister Mirza Abbas on Tuesday said attempts to embarrass the government in a bid to seize power will not ensure development in the country.

He made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at an iftar and doa mahfil organised by the Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College and Hospital Unit BNP at the Shaila Hafez Auditorium in the capital.

Abbas said the government has only recently assumed office, yet some political parties have already begun portraying it as a failure.

“If anyone thinks they can come to power by embarrassing the government, the country’s development will not be ensured. Development requires cooperation from all political parties,” he said.

He added that the government has already introduced nearly 36,000 benefits within a short time of taking office as part of fulfilling demands raised during the movement, and more facilities will be introduced gradually.

“The government is completely new. Yet some people and political parties are speaking as if it were a 17-year-old government that has done nothing,” Abbas said.

He noted that no government can implement all its plans immediately and that time is necessary to deliver results. Despite this, the present administration has begun working without even getting the chance to rest, he added.

Abbas also said the world is passing through a difficult period and some problems are therefore inevitable. However, he alleged that certain political parties are attempting to exploit the situation to embarrass the government.

“If someone comes to power by embarrassing another government, they will face the same situation one day,” he said.

He said development does not only mean constructing roads and bridges. Ensuring food, clothing, housing and healthcare for people is also a key part of development.

Addressing physicians at the event, Abbas said serving people is both a profession and a noble responsibility for doctors. He urged them to further improve the quality of healthcare while maintaining both commitments.

He said Bangladesh has made notable progress in several areas of healthcare, including heart surgery, eye treatment, dental care and diabetes management. According to him, patients from neighbouring countries also visit Bangladesh for diabetes treatment.

Abbas expressed hope that doctors will continue to improve medical services and contribute to the country’s progress while working together with the government and the people.
