Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman has strongly criticised the government over the arrest of Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman and the placing of a helmet on his head while he was being brought to court.
He said Akhtaruzzaman was harassed for protesting against the alleged mistreatment of expatriates at the airport.
The Jamaat ameer was speaking at the inauguration of a dengue awareness week at Madhubag Playground in the capital on Sunday morning.
“The people of this country and expatriates did not take his arrest lightly. What he said is 100 per cent true,” Shafiqur said, adding that placing a helmet on Akhtaruzzaman’s head while bringing him to court was intended to humiliate him.
Shafiqur said Jamaat contacted Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman after a case was filed against him, and he maintained that he had done nothing wrong.
Describing Akhtaruzzaman as “a voice of the victims and the oppressed”, Shafiqur said a false case had been filed against him.
During the event, the Jamaat ameer also criticised the government over the vandalism and looting at the Radda centre in Mirpur.
An MP was forced to resign, but no legal action was taken against the person responsible, he said.
He alleged that others involved in the incident had not been arrested either. The country’s law and order situation was alarming and that state institutions had effectively collapsed, he added.
