Ahead of the 13th parliamentary election and referendum, all activities in Lalmonirhat’s Burimari Land Port will remain suspended for three days.
Import and export operations at the port will be halted from Wednesday to Friday. Activities at the port will resume on Saturday.
On Tuesday night, Faruk Hossain, president of the Burimari C&F Agents Association, and general secretary ASM Niaz Nahid announced the directive in a statement.
The decision was taken following a special instruction from the Ministry of Public Administration issued on 9 February. The directive declared special holidays on 11 and 12 February for the election. With 13 February (Friday) being the weekend, C&F operations at the port will remain closed for three consecutive days.
The matter has already been formally communicated through letters to India’s Changrabandha and Bhutan’s customs authorities, port officials, BGB‑BSF, import‑export associations, and all relevant agencies.
Meanwhile, restrictions have also been imposed on passenger movement through the immigration checkpost. Under the directive of the Ministry of Home Affairs, people’s movement through the immigration checkpost will remain suspended from 6am on Thursday to 6am on Friday to ensure the smooth conduct of the election.
Delwar Hossain, assistant commissioner of Burimari Customs Station, said that traders had submitted a letter requesting closure for two days. With Friday’s holiday, import and export will remain suspended for three days.
