Eid-ul-Fitr — the largest religious festival for Muslims — is likely to be celebrated in Bangladesh on Saturday, as the Middle East is expected to celebrate Eid on Friday following the completion of a 30-day Ramadan.
According to the Emirates Astronomical Society, the crescent moon marking the end of Ramadan was sighted over the United Arab Emirates early Tuesday morning, Dubai-based daily Gulf News reported.
The National Moon Sighting Committee in Dhaka is scheduled to hold a meeting on Thursday at the conference room of the Islamic Foundation to decide on the matter.
The government has announced a seven-day holiday to observe the festival, projecting Eid-ul-Fitr on Friday. The holiday begins on Tuesday and ends on Monday.
The government has made extensive preparations across railways, roads and waterways to ensure smooth journeys for homebound travellers, while police and specialised agencies have been deployed nationwide to ensure safety and security at Eid gatherings.
People have already started travelling to their hometowns to celebrate Eid with their families, while tens of thousands have gathered at railway stations, bus terminals and launch terminals.
Shopping malls in the capital and clothing markets across the country are crowded with customers buying new clothes, shoes and daily essentials.
