Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has announced a comprehensive restructuring of the education system to make it job-oriented, skill-based, and modern.
He stated that the current conventional system is contributing to rising unemployment as it fails to align with job creation.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion organised by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education at the Primary Teachers’ Training Institute in Mirpur on Saturday, marking Shaheed Dibash and International Mother Language Day.
Milan said expansion of job-oriented education remains insufficient compared to national needs.
“The education system must be overhauled so that students become skilled, capable and productive,” he said, adding that when considering demands for new colleges, subjects or institutions, priority must be given to the practical demands of the job market and market relevance.
Highlighting the importance of language, he said Bangla is the mother tongue and the primary vehicle of thought and emotion, while proficiency in English as a second language is essential for international competition in the era of globalisation.
He said Bangladesh plays a unique role in preserving the Bangla language and that effective steps would be taken to preserve and develop the languages of the country’s ethnic minorities.
Speaking as special guest, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj said the foundation of education must be strengthened to build the future of Bangladesh.
He declared a zero-tolerance policy against corruption across all departments under the ministry and said no corruption would be tolerated or found within the ministry over the next five years.
Describing the ministry as the foundation of nation-building, he said sustainable development is not possible if the foundation is weak.
He identified three priority areas for improving the quality of education curriculum modernisation, effective classroom teaching and consistency of standards nationwide.
Ensuring qualitative coordination among Bangla-medium, English-medium, technical and madrasah education streams is essential, he added.
The meeting was presided over by Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Secretary Abu Taher Md Masud Rana.
Directorate of Primary Education Director General Abu Noor Md Shamsuzzaman, along with senior officials of the ministry and directorate, teachers, students and guardians, attended the programme.
