The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Friday foiled an alleged attempt by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to push 10-12 people into Bangladesh through the Kalindi River in Satkhira, taking advantage of heavy rain and adverse weather.
The incident occurred around noon at Chhoto Bashjharhia Mini Forest, located in the middle of the Kalindi River within the jurisdiction of Khurmi Border Outpost (BOP) under the Nil Dumar 17 BGB Battalion.
The location is around 3.5 kilometres south of Khurmi BOP, according to the BGB.
BGB officials said personnel from the Char Sahebkhali camp of BSF’s 77 Battalion attempted to enter Bangladesh territory carrying the unidentified group in a country boat and a speedboat amid heavy rain.
A regular BGB patrol from Khurmi BOP spotted the movement and immediately headed to the area in a speedboat, the BGB said.
The patrol intercepted the attempt, prompting the BSF personnel to turn back with the group. They returned to Indian territory around noon, according to the BGB.
Lieutenant Colonel Khandaker Abu Sahl Abdullah, commander of the Nil Dumar 17 BGB Battalion, said the unit was maintaining the highest level of vigilance along the border.
“17 BGB is performing its duties with utmost vigilance, professionalism and responsibility to ensure the country’s border security,” he said.
“No individual or group will be allowed to enter Bangladesh territory illegally,” he added.
