The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court verdict that declared illegal Election Commission’s gazette of reducing Bagerhat’s constituencies from four to three.

Following the Supreme Court order on Wednesday, the four constituencies in Bagerhat remain in place, while one constituency in Gazipur has been reduced.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed came up with the judgement dismissing four separate leave to appeal petitions.

Bagerhat will have four parliamentary constituencies and Gazipur will have five, according to the ruling.

Earlier, on 10 November, the High Court declared illegal the EC gazette notification that had reduced Bagerhat’s constituencies from four to three and increased Gazipur’s constituencies from five to six.
