A man was beaten to death by residents in a Motijheel flat in Dhaka on Tuesday evening after being caught attempting a theft, police said. Authorities have yet to identify the victim.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem on Wednesday morning.
Motijheel Police Station Sub-Inspector Kazi Arman Hossain said officers recovered the body from the staircase between the fourth and fifth floors of Karim Villa, 98/1 Arambagh, following a tip-off. The victim’s body bore multiple injuries, including marks on his hands, back, and other parts of the body.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the man broke into a sixth-floor flat to steal a mobile phone. Residents reportedly caught him in the act and beat him, resulting in his death. Police have registered a murder case, but no arrests have been made yet. Investigations are ongoing.
A local resident said the man had entered the building through the gate in the afternoon. After stealing the phone, he was caught by tenants and beaten. When he died, the tenants reportedly fled. Police later recovered the body from the staircase late at night.
Authorities are attempting to establish the victim’s identity and are reviewing CCTV footage and witness statements as part of the investigation.
