Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad has instructed police to immediately arrest all suspects involved in the murder of Special Branch (SB) Sub-Inspector (Unarmed) Md Altaf Hossain, who was killed in a criminal attack in Savar, Dhaka.
He gave the order during a meeting with the officer’s family at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Secretariat on Thursday, offering his deep condolences and promising a speedy trial.
Salahuddin announced that an initial financial grant of Tk6 lakh from the Police Headquarters Welfare Fund has already been disbursed to support the family. In addition, Community Bank Bangladesh Limited will offer financial assistance, including necessary loans, to help keep the family’s business running.
To recognise late Altaf’s integrity and bravery throughout his career, Salahuddin directed officials to award him the posthumous “Police Medal (PPM).”
Fatal attack following parking dispute
The murder occurred aaround 7:30pm on 5 September at Bordeshi Paschimpara in Aminbazar, Savar, when SI Altaf tried to settle an argument regarding auto-rickshaw parking. When criminals attacked him, he sought shelter inside his elder son’s shop.
At 8:10pm, the attackers raided the business establishment using local weapons, iron rods, pipes, hammers, and sticks. The officer’s younger son, Md Ariful Islam, was severely injured by sharp weapons whilst attempting to protect his father.
Local residents rescued both victims and took them to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where attending doctors declared the officer dead.
The officer’s wife, Sheuli Parvin, has filed a murder case naming 15 people as accused at Savar Model Police Station.
SI Altaf joined the Bangladesh Police as a constable in 1986 from Sirajganj district. Over a 40-year career, he served with integrity and dedication across several units, including DMP, Rangamati, RRF Rajshahi, RMP, and Barishal districts. He had been posted at the Special Branch (SB) in Dhaka from 2011 until his death.
