The Election Commission (EC) says it will act on Satkhira‑4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, expelled from Jamaat‑e‑Islami over allegations of moral misconduct, only after the Parliament formally refers the matter.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Mashud told reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon on Thursday that the EC has not yet received any reference, reports BSS.
He said, “Action regarding his membership of Parliament will be taken only after the matter is officially sent to the Commission.”
Mashud explained that once Parliament refers the case, the EC will investigate and hold hearings before making a decision. Until then, Gazi Nazrul will continue to serve as an MP.
He added that if Nazrul Islam resigns from Parliament, the issue will no longer fall under the EC’s jurisdiction. “Resigning as a lawmaker and resigning from a political party are two separate matters,” Mashud noted.
The commissioner said that such references should come through the Speaker’s office.
“If Parliament follows the procedure and sends the matter to us, the Commission will act in accordance with the law,” he said.
