A group of students at Dhaka University burnt an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The burning took place on Bangladesh’s Victory Day on Tuesday, as part of a programme held under the banner of programme was held under the banner of “Anti-hegemony” in front of the Ducsu building, accusing the Indian premier of “interference” and “tarnishing” the day.
During the effigy burning, the students chanted various slogans including, labeling Modi an “executioner”. One of the organisers of the programme, Riyad Jubya, said, “The people spontaneously opposed those who brought the infamous butcher of Gujarat, notorious for oppressing minorities in India, to Bangladesh by ignoring public opinion. As a result of this opposition, the Hasina government, acting as India’s agent, carried out genocide in the country and killed innocent people in broad daylight.”
He further said, “Indian support is behind the misrule that has been ongoing in the country for the last 17 years. Therefore, this is our protest against Indian hegemony.”
As part of the programme, students trampled on a sticker of Narendra Modi beside Madhur Canteen.
Earlier, around 1pm, a group of students threw shoes at a picture of Ghulam Azam in front of the Ducsu building.
