National University (NU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) A S M Amanullah called on teachers to leave factionalism and focus on improving the education environment. He said teaching is not merely a livelihood but a place of honour and responsibility, and that those unable to protect the dignity of the profession should not engage in division or factionalism using the identity of a teacher.
The VC was speaking as chief guest at the opening ceremony of “Inter-College Cultural and Debate Competition 2026” at Dhaka district level, organised by NU at Tejgaon College on Tuesday, said a press release.
Amanullah told teachers of affiliated colleges, “Stop factionalism, otherwise leave teaching. You must come out of the trauma of the last 17 years. Now is the time to look forward. Cooperate in implementing the government’s programmes, work on improving the education system. We do not want to remain outdated any longer.”
The event, held at Tejgaon College auditorium under the government’s “Learning with Happiness” programme, drew 357 students from 25 colleges in Dhaka district who participated in cultural performances including song, dance, poetry and recitation, along with debate competitions.
The NU VC said the path to higher education for teachers has been made easier. PhD scholarships have been raised from up to Tk4 lakh to up to Tk10 lakh. Opportunities for full-time and part-time MPhil and research have also been provided.
NU Pro-VC Mohammad Ali Zinnah attended the event as special guest. Tejgaon College Acting Principal Shamima Yasmin presided over the event, which was conducted by Tejgaon College Media and Theatre Studies Assistant Professor Nowrin Sazzad.
NU Registrar Molla Mahfuz Al-Hossain, NU Director of Physical Education and Culture Mohammad Shafiul Karim, Acting Dean of the Postgraduate Education, Training and Research Centre Fakir Rafiqul Alam and Acting Dean of the Undergraduate Education School Ashek Kabir Chowdhury attended the event, along with concerned National University officials, teachers, students and representatives of various colleges.
