Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam has announced that the first Saturday of every month will be observed as ‘Cleaning Day’ to prevent Aedes mosquito-borne Dengue and Chikungunya and to maintain city cleanliness.
According to the announcement made on Monday, the first official “Cleaning Day” will be observed across the DSCC area on 9 May.
Salam made this declaration during an exchange meeting held at the Nagar Bhaban conference room focused on the prevention of Dengue and Chikungunya.
This initiative aims to strengthen the weekly cleanliness programme declared by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, with DSCC leading a coordinated effort involving all government institutions, agencies, and general citizens.
In accordance with the meeting’s decisions, self-initiated cleaning drives and the destruction of mosquito breeding grounds will be conducted across all government institutions, staff quarters, educational institutions (schools, colleges, and madrasas), areas under the jurisdiction of RAJUK and REHAB, and privately owned plots.
The administrator also issued instructions to maintain the highest levels of professionalism regarding the quality of pesticides used by the DSCC, their application methods, supervision, and the training of personnel.
“Public awareness and cleanliness are our primary weapons in preventing Dengue and Chikungunya,” said Salam during his presiding speech.
“Mosquito-borne diseases can only be eradicated if government and private organisations, as well as citizens, keep their respective premises clean. No negligence in DSCC’s mosquito control activities will be tolerated.”
Salam also called upon media representatives to broadcast awareness messages regarding the prevention of Dengue and Chikungunya in the public interest, alongside their commercial advertisements.
The exchange meeting was attended by representatives from various government and autonomous bodies, including the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), DMP, DMC, BGB, Islamic Foundation, RAJUK, Bangladesh Railway, REHAB, the Directorate of Education, and Jagannath University.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Zahirul Islam and other senior officials were also present at the event.
