Heavy rains caused severe waterlogging in different places of Chattogram port city on Thursday, disrupting public life, business activities and traffic.
The port city recorded 44.1mm rainfall between 6am and 3pm on Thursday, according to Patenga Weather Office.
Ismail Bhuiyan, a meteorologist of the Met office, told the TIMES of Bangladesh that a light-to-moderate rain is expected to continue in the next two days.
“However, the overall weather condition is likely to improve afterward,” he forecast.
Locals said the morning rains led to waterlogging in several parts of Chattogram city, including Agrabad, Chawk Bazar, and Panchlaish.
Many commuters were forced to wade through flooded streets to reach their destinations.
Many residents alleged that rainwater cannot recede quickly from the city streets due to poor drainage system.
Although the rainwater started to recede, low-income people faced severe difficulties amid the waterlogging.
The overnight downpour has caused severe traffic chaos in the city during the period. Around 11am, many vehicles and rickshaws were seen idle during the rainy period.
Street vendors selling tea, biscuits, and cigarettes and some businesses also closed their activities due to the rain.
Braving the torrential rains, the people of Hindu community in the city celebrated their largest religious festival Durga Puja amid fanfare through immersion of their idols.
