A doctor of Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, Dhaka, has been temporarily suspended over allegations of making offensive remarks about Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
According to an order signed on Friday by the medical college principal Dr Md Motahar Hossain Bhuiyan, Professor Dr Tajin Afroze Shah of the Department of Medicine was placed under suspension.
The order said, “You are hereby temporarily suspended from the post of professor (Department of Medicine) of the medical college and hospital over allegations of making offensive comments about Osman Hadi on Facebook recently.”
The order will take effect from December 19, it said.
It also said he has been instructed to submit a written explanation within seven days as to why he should not be permanently dismissed.
The same order said Dr Tajin Afroze Shah has also been relieved of his responsibilities as secretary general of the doctors’ organisation Bangladesh Doctors Foundation (BDF).
Earlier, on 12 December, Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi was shot while returning after taking part in election campaigning.
He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later sent to Singapore on 15 December for advanced treatment. He died on Thursday night while undergoing treatment there.
Soon after Hadi’s death, a screenshot allegedly showing derogatory remarks about Osman Hadi from the Facebook account of Enam Medical College Hospital doctor Dr Tajin Afroze Shah spread on social media, triggering widespread criticism.
However, Dr Tajin Afroze Shah claimed that his Facebook account had been hacked.
In a later post from his account, he said that in addition to the account being hacked, money had also been demanded from him.
