Two schoolchildren drowned in a pond in Batkekhali village of Satkhira town on Monday.
The victims were Habiba Khatun Lima, 9, a Class III student of Satkhira Mission Government Primary School, and Mir Labib Hossain, 10, a Class IV student of the same school.
Their bodies were recovered from Gafur Saheb’s pond in Batkekhali village around 12:30pm, local residents said.
The children left their homes around 9am but did not return. As time passed, their families began searching for them in different places.
Around noon, a local man went to the pond for a bath and noticed two pairs of shoes near the bank.
Suspecting something was wrong, he entered the water and found one of the children.
Later, locals recovered the bodies of both children from the pond and rushed them to Satkhira Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctor Pratyay Saha declared them dead.
Satkhira Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahmudur Rahman confirmed the deaths and said necessary legal steps were being taken.
