The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced that it will initiate strict legal action from next week against vehicles that fail to use the prescribed registration number plates supplied by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
The announcement was made on Monday in a public notice signed by the acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar.
According to the notice, it is legally mandatory for all registered vehicles plying the roads to display number plates of the government-prescribed colour, design, and size in their designated positions.
However, the DMP has observed that many vehicles are not using the BRTA-supplied registration plates or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags.
In some instances, plates are not fixed in the correct locations, while other owners are operating vehicles with numbers simply painted on instead of using official plates.
The public notice further highlighted that many vehicle owners have not collected their prescribed plates and RFID tags from the BRTA despite having paid the necessary fees.
Furthermore, some RFID tags attached to vehicle windshields have been found to be inactive, which is creating complications in the city’s traffic management.
The DMP has urged all vehicle owners and drivers to ensure that BRTA-prescribed number plates are installed in the correct positions and to confirm that the RFID tags on their windshields are functional.
Starting next week, the authorities will implement strict legal measures, including fines, against any vehicle found without the official BRTA-supplied registration plates and RFID tags. The DMP has sought the cooperation of all citizens and stakeholders in this regard.
