Former minister Dipu Moni, journalists Mozammel Babu and Farzana Rupa were produced before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in a case over killings during Hefazat‑e‑Islam’s rally in Dhaka’s Shapla Chattar in 2013.
They were brought from prison to the tribunal on Thursday morning as a hearing in the case is scheduled to take place.
The case concerns the deaths that occurred during and around the Hefazat rally held at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel on 5 May 2013.
According to prosecution, investigators have so far identified 58 people who were killed in connection with the incident in different parts of the country. Of them, 32 were killed in Dhaka, 20 in Narayanganj, five in Chattogram and one in Cumilla.
Prosecution officials said former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from office, would be made the prime accused in the case.
The investigation remains ongoing. As part of the inquiry, members of the investigation agency have visited the graves of the victims and interviewed their family members.
So far, six people have been arrested in the case. They include former state minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, retired major general Ziaul Ahsan, former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Haque, former deputy inspector general Mollah Nazrul Islam, Shahriar Kabir, president of the advisory council of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, and former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal.
The complaint over the Shapla Chattar killings was filed by Hefazat leader Azizul Haque on behalf of Hefazat leaders Junayed Al Habib and Mamunul Haque. The complaint named 21 people as accused.
