The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Thursday ordered authorities to produce former minister Dipu Moni and journalists Mozammel Babu and Farzana Rupa before it in a crimes against humanity case linked to the 2013 Shapla Chattar crackdown.
The tribunal directed that the three be presented before the court on May 14, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam confirmed to reporters.
The case concerns the deaths that occurred during and around the Hefazat-e-Islam rally held at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel on 5 May, 2013.
According to prosecution sources, investigators have so far identified 58 people who were killed in connection with the incident in different parts of the country.
Of them, 32 were killed in Dhaka, 20 in Narayanganj, five in Chattogram and one in Cumilla.
Prosecution officials said former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from office, would be made the prime accused in the case.
The investigation remains ongoing. As part of the inquiry, members of the investigation agency have visited the graves of the victims and interviewed their family members.
So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the case. They include former state minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, retired major general Ziaul Ahsan, former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Haque, former deputy inspector general Mollah Nazrul Islam, Shahriar Kabir, president of the advisory council of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, and former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal.
The complaint over the Shapla Chattar killings was filed with the tribunal’s chief prosecutor by Hefazat-e-Islam leader Azizul Haque on behalf of Hefazat leaders Junayed Al Habib and Mamunul Haque. The complaint named 21 people as accused.
