Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the army will be withdrawn gradually from field-level law enforcement duties as discipline has returned to the police force.
He made the remarks on Thursday while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat.
The minister said, “The government has taken a policy decision not to keep the army deployed indefinitely for maintaining law and order in the field.”
He said public confidence has grown following the restoration of discipline within the police force after the elected political government assumed office.
“In this situation, we are taking steps to gradually withdraw the army from the field,” he said.
However, he added “Police, army and other relevant agencies will jointly decide how the process will be implemented through coordination.”
Referring to the ongoing law enforcement drives, Salahuddin Ahmed said operations are continuing regularly against listed criminals, drug traders, armed groups and those involved in gambling.
He said nobody is above the law and the drives are being conducted based on properly prepared lists.
The minister also said, “Joint operations are being carried out in some areas, while law enforcement agencies are also conducting separate drives independently.”
He claimed the operations have shown visible progress and improved the country’s law and order situation.
