Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday reaffirmed his government’s uncompromising stance against corruption during a meeting with Iftekharuzzaman, the Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
The meeting took place on Thursday at the prime minister’s office in the Secretariat.
According to Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon, the discussions focused on the necessary steps to be taken to make the country corruption-free. The PM emphasised that his government maintains a policy of strict adherence against corruption.
Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani was also present during the meeting.
Speaking to journalists following the session, Iftekharuzzaman stated that TIB had submitted specific recommendations regarding good governance and anti-corruption measures to the government.
He noted that the PM received these proposals very positively and assured that they would be implemented. Specifically, TIB advised that the reform and restructuring of institutions such as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are essential.
Iftekharuzzaman further remarked that the current government intends to send a global message that it is committed and uncompromising in its fight against corruption.
As part of efforts to brighten Bangladesh’s image on the international stage, TIB proposed that Bangladesh host the 2028 International Anti-Corruption Conference. The PM Tarique has assured that necessary steps will be taken to facilitate this.
The TIB executive director explained that the international conference is held every two years, with this year’s event scheduled to take place in the Dominican Republic.
In the history of the conference, only three Asian nations Malaysia, Thailand, and South Korea have hosted the event. “We believe 2028 is the appropriate time for Bangladesh to host the conference,” Iftekharuzzaman said.
He added that the PM has agreed in principle to the proposal, and the government will move forward with the hosting bid once it receives formal consent from the Cabinet.
