Bangladesh Open University (BOU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan on Thursday urged graduating law students to uphold truth, justice and moral values, as the university hosted the farewell ceremony of the 8th batch of its LLB (Honours) programme at the Dhaka Regional Centre.
The event, organised by the outgoing students of the 2020-21 session under the School of Law, brought together teachers, officials, alumni and students from different batches at the centre’s conference room, said a press release.
“Education is not merely about obtaining certificates, but about becoming a person with moral and human values,” said Bangladesh Open University Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan while addressing the programme as chief guest.
He said the university was established by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia to ensure access to higher education for marginalised people across the country.
The vice-chancellor said the university’s activities have expanded internationally, with many students contributing to the economy as remittance earners from abroad.
He added that BOU students come from diverse professional and social backgrounds, including working-class people and established professionals.
Highlighting the role of alumni, he expressed hope that the achievements of former law students would strengthen the university’s reputation further.
He also said the administration was working to resolve institutional challenges and increase the number of faculty members in the future.
Calling on students to practise patriotism and ethical values, he said respect for the national anthem, national flag, and the country’s independence and sovereignty must be upheld.
He stressed the need for stronger branding of the university and said students should act as brand ambassadors of BOU.
The vice-chancellor also emphasised the importance of forming an alumni association and establishing a debating club.
Addressing the graduates, he said their relationship with the university would continue beyond graduation and that they would always remain part of the BOU family.
School of Law Dean Professor Nahid Ferdousi chaired the programme.
She urged students to work with honesty, professionalism and dedication in their careers.
She said legal education is not only preparation for a profession, but also a means of practising justice, humanity and moral values.
Expressing hope that BOU graduates would contribute positively to the country’s judiciary and society, she wished the students success in their future endeavours.
Among others, Acting Registrar TM Ahmed Hossain, Dhaka Regional Centre Director Md Nasir Uddin, School of Law lecturers Richimoni Proma and Sajal Ahmed, former BOU law student and ETV journalist Harun Ur Rashid, Dhaka Judge Court Advocate Gazi Hasan Mahmud, Advocate Suman Parvez, Advocate Kajal Roy and Advocate Sharif Khan also spoke at the event.
The programme was hosted by outgoing batch student Liton Hossain and 12th batch student Tasnuva Tushin.
Students of the 8th batch welcomed the guests, including the vice-chancellor, with flowers and ceremonial scarves and later presented crests to them.
The vice-chancellor also greeted the graduating students with tuberose flowers on behalf of the university.
A cultural programme featuring student performances was held after the formal session.
