DBL Ceramics has launched what it calls the world’s first autism-friendly tile collection, NeuroTiles, alongside an open-source inclusive design guideline aimed at improving environments for children with autism, the company said in a press release.
The initiative follows six months of research into children’s preferences on shapes, colours and textures, as the company seeks to address a gap where homes and schools are rarely designed to meet the needs of an estimated 68.1 million children living with autism worldwide.
The research found children respond better to soft, calming colours, matte textures, simple shapes and consistent patterns, which help improve focus, reduce restlessness and support emotional control.
The study involved doctors, psychologists, teachers and designers, as well as experts from Kalyani Inclusive School, National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital and Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
The guideline has been made open-source to encourage wider adoption and is available for free download at the company’s website.
DBL Ceramics said the initiative aligns with its “Designed for Life” philosophy and aims to enable inclusive product and environment design.
DBL Ceramics Chief Business Officer Mohammad Bayazed Bashar said, “If even one child with autism feels comfortable in their own room for the first time, then this effort will be truly worthwhile.”
