The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Thursday handed over former army officer Major Mozzafar Hossain, an accused in the assassination case of former president Ziaur Rahman, to military authorities following his arrest.
Mozzafar, 77, was handed over to a team of Military Police from Dhaka Cantonment at 6:10pm after completing necessary legal procedures, the DB said.
The DB arrested Mozzafar from a residence in the capital’s Banani area at around 10:10pm on Wednesday.
He had been absconding since the assassination of Ziaur Rahman, according to the police.
DB officials said Mozzafar had remained in hiding at different locations since the assassination.
His whereabouts were traced through information from reliable sources and technology-based analysis.
The operation was conducted by a DB team under the direction of Additional Commissioner of Police (Detective) Md Shafiqul Islam.
After the arrest, DB officials verified his identity during questioning and informed the Armed Forces Division, according to the statement.
Mozzafar was later transferred to military authorities in line with established procedures.
