The state-owned Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) in Anwara shut down again on Sunday, just 12 hours after resuming operations following a closure of more than six and a half months.

Factory Managing Director Mizanur Rahman said production began around 3:30am on Saturday but was suspended at 3:15pm the next day due to a mechanical fault.

“Production is currently halted for technical reasons. I am at the plant and will share details later,” he said.

According to factory sources, the gas supply remained stable after production resumed, but a sudden malfunction in the ammonia unit forced authorities to stop operations for safety reasons.

The long-awaited restart had brought relief to local residents and employees, but the abrupt shutdown left workers disheartened.

Established in 1987, CUFL is one of Bangladesh’s major urea fertiliser plants, but frequent gas shortages and mechanical failures have repeatedly disrupted its production in recent years.
