Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Azaz commented that dengue can be controlled through public awareness and the collective efforts of all service-providing institutions.
He made the remark at a press conference on the current dengue situation and control activities, held in the meeting room of the DNCC head office in Gulshan on Sunday morning.
On this occasion, he said, “At the beginning of the monsoon season this year, we held a meeting with experts. We have tried to implement the recommendations provided by the experts in that meeting throughout the year.”
He further said, “Analysing recent data shows that the number of dengue patients and deaths has decreased compared to previous years. However, even a single death from dengue is not acceptable to us. We are trying to provide maximum service even with limited manpower.”
The DNCC administrator also informed, “According to international standards, 2.3 workers per thousand people are needed to protect public health, but we have one worker per 11 thousand people – which is extremely inadequate compared to the requirement.”
In response to a question from journalists, he said, “To strengthen service activities at the field level as per the advice of experts, 7 inspectors have been appointed in the DNCC area.”
Also present at the press conference were DNCC Chief Executive Officer (Acting) Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury, Entomologist Professor Md. Rashedul Islam, representatives from government health agencies and hospitals, and officials from various levels of DNCC.
