A student at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) was harassed and physically assaulted after a university-bound bus was intercepted in Burishchar area of Hathazari upazila.
The victim, Aminul Kuddus Chowdhury, a second-year student of Cuet’s Mechanical Engineering department, alleged that the assailants beat him after labelling him as an activist of Chhatra League and Shibir.
He boarded the Cuet-bound bus from Bahaddarhat in Chattogram city on Monday to join a movement.
When the vehicle was stopped in Madunaghat area along the route, Chowdhury got off to check the situation, having had no prior knowledge of what was occurring.
He said as soon as he brought out his mobile phone to make a call, a group of people surrounded him, pulled his clothes, grabbed his hair, and beat him. He also alleged that they attempted to forcibly take him away from the spot.
Chowdhury added that as the situation escalated, several local residents intervened and escorted him to safety, rescuing him from major danger.
Students have alleged that local leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal were involved in the attack. However, comments from the accused could not be obtained.
Meanwhile, current and former students at the university called for a human chain protest in front of Chattogram Press Club at 5pm on Monday.
Organisers informed that the programme was arranged to protest the assault and demand guaranteed safety for students, calling upon all current and former Cuet students to join the demonstration.
