Eleven people, including new Vice-Chancellor Sheikh Shariful Alam, remain confined inside the administrative building at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet).

They have been inside the building for nearly 24 hours.

Meanwhile, around 11am on Tuesday, protesting students delivered breakfast to those confined inside.

The protesters locked the gate around 12:30pm on Monday after VC Shariful did not leave the building by the deadline they had set. They also disconnected the building’s electricity supply.

During the protest, they chanted various slogans, including “Lock it, lock it, lock it; the vice-chancellor’s building must be locked” and “Reject, reject, reject the online VC.”

Ijaz Mahmud Khan, a fourth-year student in the Department of Civil Engineering, said, “The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor will remain confined until he resigns. Yesterday, even after we gave him sufficient time to leave, he chose to remain inside. We have delivered breakfast to everyone confined inside.”

The VC entered office after breaking lock on the VC building on Monday morning. Later, around noon, protesting students gave him a deadline to leave the building. When he did not do so, they confined him inside.

Since then, the VC and the others staying in the building have remained confined there.
