Students who fail in two subjects in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations will get an opportunity to retake the exams within 15 days, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has said.
He said the government would not allow students to remain stuck in a cycle of failure year after year.
Those unable to make the expected progress in general education would be brought under technical education.
The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists after inaugurating an orientation training course for 651 newly appointed officers of the 49th Bangladesh Civil Service (General Education) cadre at the Rural Development Academy (RDA) in Bogura on Tuesday.
Milon said the government is making every effort to help students at risk of dropping out build a better future.
“Students will not have to wait for years to sit for examinations again, and there will be no unnecessary delays,” he said, adding that those unable to progress in general education would be given the opportunity to pursue technical education.
Focus on moral education and sports
Responding to a question about moral education among students, the minister said moral values had declined in the country and that the situation needed to change.
Following directives from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the government is placing greater emphasis on cultural activities, sports and moral education in schools from Class-IV, he said.
The government has begun working to develop a generation with stronger moral values, Milon added.
Sports activities have already started at the primary level and are also underway at the secondary level. The Prime Minister’s Gold Cup is also being organised, he said.
The government aims to create a festive and engaging environment in educational institutions by combining academic studies with sports, according to the minister.

The programme was held at the RDA auditorium in Bogura, with Sardar Md Keramat Ali, who is performing the routine duties of secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, in the chair.
