Students of Dhaka University (DU) staged a sit-in outside the Proctor’s office on Wednesday, demanding justice for at least seven students injured after being struck by a car driven by a teacher’s son on campus the previous day.
The protest began around 1 pm after students arrived at the office to seek details of the legal and administrative measures taken over Tuesday’s incident but found the Proctor absent.
The demonstrators issued a one-hour ultimatum, warning that they would lock the office unless the Proctor appeared and provided a clear explanation of the steps taken against those responsible.
The accident occurred around 11:30am on Tuesday near the Faculty of Business Studies (FBS) gate, where a car struck seven students.
The injured were rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
The protesters put forward seven demands, including full coverage of the injured students’ medical expenses, disclosure and preservation of CCTV footage and a proper trial of the accused.
They also sought assurances about the nature of the case and the charge sheet, long-term measures to ensure safe vehicle movement on campus, compensation for damaged belongings and appropriate action against the accused student.
Biplobi Chhatra Maitree member Israt Jahan Emu said the protesters would lock the Proctor’s office if he failed to appear within an hour and provide a clear response on the measures taken.
