A 23-year-old Chittagong University student died after drowning in Kaptai Lake in Rangamati on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased, Md Intishar Hasnat, was a student in the International Relations department. He was the son of Md Belal Uddin, Vice-Principal of Chittagong Cantonment College, and Shahin Akter. The family resides in the DOHS area of Chittagong Cantonment.
According to university and local sources, the incident occurred around 4:30 pm in the Mayabi Dwip area near Reserve Bazar. Intishar and three friends were touring the lake on a tourist boat. At one point, they entered the water to bathe without wearing life jackets, when Intishar suddenly sank.
Following the accident, his friends contacted the national emergency service 999 and the Fire Service. A diving team from the Fire Service, along with members of the Tourist Police, arrived to conduct a rescue operation.
The divers recovered Intishar and transported him to the emergency department of Rangamati General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:30 pm.
CU Proctor Hossain Shahid Suhrawardy confirmed the incident, noting that the group of four friends had met with the accident while visiting Rangamati.
