At least 11 people have been killed and several others remain missing after the collapse of an informal gold mine in Guinea, rescue workers and local sources told AFP on Tuesday.
The accident took place on Monday at an artisanal mining site in the northeast of the country.
“At least eleven people have lost their lives, four others were injured and several are still reported missing,” a local Red Cross official told AFP on Tuesday.
Search operations continued on Tuesday as rescue teams worked to locate survivors or recover victims trapped under rubble, the official said.
A security source present at the site confirmed the provisional death toll.
A local official told AFP that the toll could still rise as search efforts continue under difficult conditions, including heavy rain and a lack of equipment.
Authorities have reinforced the security perimeter around the site to support rescue operations and maintain order.
Deadly accidents in artisanal mines are frequent in Guinea, where informal miners often work without protection, taking high risks in search of gold.
