Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Shahadat Hossain has visited several areas of the city as part of efforts to intensify ongoing initiatives to reduce waterlogging.
During the visit, he oversaw canal and drain cleaning activities and took a strict stance against illegal encroachment and public negligence.
On Monday morning, the mayor first inspected the road adjacent to the Bahaddarhat Kacha Bazar. Expressing anger over illegal structures built on the road, he ordered their immediate eviction.
He later visited the ongoing canal restoration work by the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) in the Bahaddarhat area and directed the removal of barriers obstructing water flow. He also instructed the construction of a Bailey bridge in the area to facilitate local movement.
He then inspected canal and drain cleaning operations in the Faridar Para area under Ward No. 4 (Chandgaon), followed by another inspection at Khaja Road under Ward No 6.
During the visits, Mayor Shahadat said, “It is not enough to implement projects alone; city residents must also become aware. If people continue to dump waste indiscriminately, canals and drains will be filled again, leading to waterlogging.”
He added, “Everyone must work together to build a clean and livable Chattogram. A lasting solution is not possible without public cooperation.”
According to CCC sources, a month-long canal and drainage cleaning programme is being carried out across various wards ahead of the monsoon season. Alongside field monitoring, special emphasis is being given to keeping the drainage system functional to reduce waterlogging.
