A Chattogram court has sentenced a man to death for the murder of seven-year-old Mahfuz, who was strangled with a gamcha [checkered towel] in Chattogram’s Halishahar area.
Md Al Amin, 44, was also handed seven years of rigorous imprisonment for concealing evidence and disposing of the body. Nishaduzzaman, the judge of Chattogram Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court, delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
The convict, Al Amin is from Karpasha Putihara of Nikli Upazila in Kishoreganj.
According to court sources, the child was murdered in a premeditated manner on the morning of 5 September 2016, in Golidhipapara Toll Road under Halishahar Police Station. To hide the crime, the perpetrator dumped the body into a canal adjacent to nearby embankment.
Following the murder, the victim’s father, Md Mahabub, filed a case with Halishahar Police Station.
Upon completion of investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet to the court, and the trial formally commenced on 27 April 2017. The final verdict has been reached after a judicial process lasting nearly a decade.
Md Shahidul Islam, the bench assistant of the concerned court, confirmed that the judge found Al Amin guilty under the Penal Code for murder.
This conviction was based on the testimony of 12 witnesses, as well as presented evidence and other proof. Alongside the death penalty, the court imposed a fine of Tk25,000.
Additionally, the court sentenced Al Amin to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk5,000 for concealing evidence and moving the body. Failure to pay this fine will result in an additional two months of simple imprisonment.
