A court sent expelled Jubo Dal leader Ferdous Ahmed Simon to jail on completion of his remand in a case filed over alleged physical assault and blank firing after failing to collect extortion money in Banglamotor, Dhaka.
The investigating officer (IO) of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Nasim of Hatirjheel Police Station, produced Simon before the court on Tuesday following a four-day remand and petitioned to keep him detained in jail.
Following the hearing, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana ordered him to be sent to jail.
Sub-Inspector Arif Reza of the Prosecution Department confirmed the matter. He said three other accused in the case were sent to jail on Monday after completing their three-day remand, while Simon was sent to jail on Tuesday after completing his four-day remand.
In the petition seeking the accused’s detention in jail, the investigating officer mentioned that Simon provided key information regarding the case during his four-day remand.
This information is currently being verified. The IO further mentioned that the accused might abscond if released on bail, making his detention in jail necessary in the interest of a proper investigation.
Earlier, on 2 October, the court ordered Simon and three other accused to be placed on remand for different terms. The other accused in the case are Omar, 32, Morshed, 25, and Md Shawon, 25.
According to the case details, at around 7:15pm on 1 October, the accused intercepted plaintiff Md Sohan in front of a house in New Eskaton area of Banglamotor under Hatirjheel Police Station.
Prime accused Simon demanded Tk50,000 in extortion from him. When the plaintiff refused to pay the extortion money, Simon pulled out a pistol, aimed it at his chest, and attempted to shoot, according to the allegations.
At one point, Simon struck the plaintiff on the head with butt of the pistol, while the other accused also beat him.
When nearby people rushed to the scene, the accused left. Injured Sohan received primary treatment at a local pharmacy. Later, while on his way for advanced medical treatment, his brother-in-law Md Moktar Hossain met him.
The complaint further mentioned that Simon and the other accused arrived at the scene on motorbikes and attempted to assault Sohan again.
When Moktar Hossain tried to intervene, he was also beaten. At one stage, Simon allegedly fired three blank rounds with his pistol. Local residents then chased and detained several of the accused, including Simon, who was apprehended while attempting to flee.
Upon receiving the information, Hatirjheel Police Station officers went to the spot and took them into custody. Following the incident, victim Md Sohan filed the case as plaintiff with Hatirjheel Police Station.
