The Election Commission’s senior secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the court ruling on boundaries raises questions for the EC.
He made the remark on Thursday, when asked about the verdict concerning Bagerhat and Faridpur constituencies.
The EC secretary said he does not have the authority to comment on the court’s jurisdiction. When asked if the ruling undermines the EC’s power, he replied that it raises questions for the commission.
Asked whether the EC’s authority is being diminished, he clarified “Questioned does not mean diminished. Questioned means it is open to challenge. Diminished means nullified. There is a difference between the two.”
He added that the schedule will be announced for 300 seats.
Referring to the court ruling, he confirmed that Bagerhat’s seat will not be reduced. He also assured that a level playing field will be ensured in the upcoming election.
