Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued seven people, including women and children, from an alleged human trafficking attempt to Malaysia in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
However, traffickers managed to escape during the operation, and no arrests were made.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan said the rescue followed a tip-off about a house in South Lumburi under Teknaf Police Station, where women and children were being held for trafficking abroad.
Based on this information, a special operation was launched at 4pm on Monday by the Coast Guard Station Teknaf.
“During the operation, seven people, including women and children, were rescued from the house,” he said.
He added “The traffickers fled on sensing the Coast Guard’s presence, so no arrests could be made.”
Preliminary questioning revealed that the organised trafficking group had lured Bangladeshi and Rohingya citizens from Cox’s Bazar and other areas with promises of better life abroad, high-paying jobs, and low-cost passage to Malaysia.
“The rescued individuals have been handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station for further legal action,” added Lt Commander Sujan.
He also confirmed that the Bangladesh Coast Guard will continue its operations to prevent human trafficking along the coast.
