The class activities for the first batch of the proposed “Dhaka Central University”, comprising seven colleges in the capital, will commence from 1 January of next year. Work is underway to refine the draft ordinance with this goal in mind.
This information was provided in a press release signed by Khalid Mahmud, the public relations officer of the Ministry of Education, on Monday.
This decision has been made in light of meetings with the university’s interim administration, principals of the seven colleges, the University Grants Commission, and guardians.
The Ministry of Education stated that the admission process for 9,388 students for the 2024-25 academic year at Dhaka Central University has already been completed. Teachers have expressed optimism that their classes can begin from January 1, 2026, after the upcoming winter vacation ends.
The Ministry of Education made this announcement amidst one party’s ultimatum demanding amendments to the ‘draft ordinance’ of the proposed Dhaka Central University and another party’s movement demanding the immediate issuance of the ordinance to start classes.
Regarding the ordinance, the ministry stated that the draft ordinance is being refined following a realistic and statutory procedure concerning matters such as the preservation of teachers’ and officials’ positions, maintaining the distinct identity of the colleges, not reducing opportunities for women’s education, preserving the core characteristics of colleges designated for women, maintaining the ownership of movable and immovable properties by the colleges, and not disrupting the existing secondary education activities in the colleges. It is hoped that an inter-ministerial meeting on the refined draft will be held by 25 December.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Education has called upon all parties involved in the movement to be patient.
