At least 16 people were injured in separate incidents of attacks and clashes at four polling centres in Meherpur on Thursday.
According to reports, a clash broke out between BNP and Jamaat supporters at Saharbati Government Primary School polling centre in Gangni upazila under Meherpur-2 constituency, leaving 10 Jamaat activists injured.
Six of them were admitted to Meherpur General Hospital.
At the same time, at Chatian polling centre in Gangni upazila, BNP activists prevented Jamaat voters from entering. Four Jamaat supporters were injured, three of whom were taken to Gangni Upazila Health Complex.
Around 10:30am, another clash occurred in Khasmahal village of Gangni upazila, injuring one BNP activist.
Meanwhile, in Meherpur-1 constituency, two Jamaat supporters were injured when BNP activists attacked them on their way home after voting at Chandpur Government Primary School polling centre. Police later detained one BNP activist.
Meherpur Superintendent of Police Ujjal Kumar Roy said law enforcers had brought the situation under control. Voting was continuing peacefully, and legal action regarding the clashes was underway.
