Authorities have arrested another member of the extortion gang involved in the Chokbazar shooting incident targeting a local businessman in Chattogram.
Earlier, three suspects were apprehended in connection with the case, and a large cache of firearms was recovered.
The latest arrest took place around 3:30am on Thursday based on a tip-off. The operation was conducted in the Madrasa area under Hathazari Police Station.
The arrested individual, Syed Md Mujibul Haque, 55, is a resident of Purpura in Hathazari. According to RAB sources, he is a key accused in the case filed under Chokbazar Police Station.
Following his arrest, he was handed over to Chokbazar Police Station.
Previously, on 11 March, police had arrested three other suspects in the same case. A submachine gun, a 9mm Taurus pistol from Brazil, and a foreign-made .32 bore revolver were recovered from them.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Wahidul Hoque Chowdhury said “The attack on Smart Group owner Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury’s residence occurred on 28 February after he refused to pay Tk1 crore in extortion.”
He added that the first attack demanding extortion took place on 2 January at the same businessman’s residence in Chandanpura.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that operations against the extortion gang are ongoing, and efforts continue to apprehend other members involved.
