A court has granted a three-day remand for Amanullah Aman Sagar, a madrasa teacher in Netrokona accused of raping an 11-year-old student who was later found to be pregnant.
Netrokona Senior Judicial Magistrate Mohsina Islam passed the order on Thursday after the accused was produced before the court.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-14 arrested Sagar from Gouripur in Mymensingh early Wednesday morning and later handed him over to Madan Police Station.
Police sought a seven-day remand for interrogation. The court later granted a three-day remand.
The allegation came to light after a local physician publicly spoke on 1 May about the condition of the child, a student at the same madrasa where Sagar teaches, after she visited the doctor’s chamber for treatment.
Earlier, the child’s mother filed a case against the arrested teacher.
According to the case statement, the child was taken to a diagnostic centre in Madan upazila on 18 April after her family noticed changes in her physical condition. Doctors later confirmed that she was seven months pregnant.
The child later alleged that on 2 October last year, the accused called her into his room at the madrasa where she studied in Madan upazila and raped her.
The allegation triggered widespread outrage in the area, after which the accused allegedly went into hiding with his family.
During the controversy, Sayma Akter, the physician who revealed the incident, also received threats online. Several Facebook accounts allegedly threatened to rape and kill her, while similar threats were also made over the phone.
RAB-14 said it intensified intelligence surveillance after learning about the case.
Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team arrested Sagar from the Sonampur area of Gouripur at around 4:15am on Wednesday.
According to RAB, the accused first took shelter in Gazipur and later in Tongi before moving to Gouripur.
The elite force said he did not carry a mobile phone, making it difficult to track his movements initially. His location was later identified through intelligence monitoring.
