Changing diet first step towards cancer prevention: Health adviser

Health and Family Welfare Adviser Nurjahan Begum has said that the number of patients diagnosed with cancer is increasing day by day in Bangladesh, and changing our dietary habits is the first step towards preventing its onset in the future.

The health adviser said this at an event organised at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital on the occasion of “Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025” on Monday. The institute’s director, Professor Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin, presided over the event.

Calling for the creation of specialist doctors, Nurjahan Begum said, “We need to train specialist doctors so that we can spread cancer awareness to all 64 districts. The current government has arranged for cancer, kidney, and dialysis treatment in every divisional hospital.”

Nurjahan Begum went on to say that linacs – linear accelerators – are necessary for cancer treatment, and the current government has made arrangements to purchase six more linacs at a cost of Tk363 crore, expected to arrive in the country within the next few months.

Thanking the relevant authorities of the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute for taking timely measures in breast cancer treatment, she said that the government would continue all kinds of support in this regard.

Speaking as a guest at the event, the Director General of the Health Services Professor Dr Md Abu Jafar, said, “If breast cancer is detected at the time, a one hundred percent cure is possible. For this, we must undergo screening at the right time, without feeling shame or fear. Recently, it has been discoverd that breast cancer can occur even in those under the age of 30. Therefore, f any kind of symptom appears, one must immediately consult a doctor regardless of age.”
