A nationwide campaign will begin at public universities to secure a ‘Yes’ outcome in the upcoming referendum.
The decision came at a meeting on Sunday evening between a University Grants Commission delegation and Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Ali Riaz at the National Parliament complex.
To facilitate the campaign, organisers have divided public universities across the country into six zones—Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, Jashore, Mymensingh and Sylhet.
The campaign will start with exchange meetings with students in each zone. Meetings will take place in Dhaka and Mymensingh on 31 January, in Chattogram and Sylhet on 2 February, and in Rajshahi and Jashore on 3 February.
Speaking at the meeting, Ali Riaz said youthful courage and collective action had brought down long-standing autocracy and would now shape the journey of a new Bangladesh.
“After 54 years, the country has a chance to build a democratic society,” he said. “The role of young people is indispensable in this process.”
He said the exchange meetings aimed to encourage young people to motivate citizens to vote ‘Yes’ in the referendum.
Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haider, University Grants Commission member Tanzimuddin Khan, Anwar Hossain and others were present at the meeting.
