Life in the tea town of Sreemangal has been severely disrupted as the lowest temperature in the country was recorded there.
On Monday, the minimum temperature in Sreemangal dropped to 10 degrees Celsius. Biting cold and dense fog have significantly hampered life in both urban and rural areas.
According to the Sreemangal Weather Observation Centre, the temperature remained at this level from 6am to 11am on Monday.
Rakibul Hasan, a senior official at the centre, said, “Although the winter season is nearing its end, the temperature may drop further.”
The severe cold has caused the greatest suffering for tea garden workers, children and the elderly. Low-income groups are leading inhuman lives due to the lack of adequate winter clothing. At the same time, the number of patients affected by cold-related illnesses is increasing day by day.
Local residents have demanded the immediate distribution of warm clothes and the provision of necessary government assistance.
