The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) on Monday organised a workshop titled “Civil Aviation & Air Traffic Operation” at its headquarters auditorium in Kurmitola, Dhaka, to strengthen journalists’ technical knowledge and practical understanding of the country’s aviation sector. The event, organised by CAAB’s Public Relations Division, brought together journalists from media organisations across the country.
CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Md Mostafa Mahmood Siddiq, BSP, GUP, ndc, afwc, acsc, psc attended the workshop as the chief guest and said the initiative aimed to provide journalists with practical knowledge of airport management, air traffic management, aviation security, passenger services and other technical aspects of the aviation sector to support more informed and responsible reporting.
A presentation on civil aviation was delivered by CAAB Member (Operations and Planning) Air Commodore Abu Sayeed Mehboob Khan, BUP, ndc, psc. He outlined the authority’s responsibilities and activities, airport operations, airside and landside operations, passenger services and aviation security. He also highlighted the importance of modern air traffic management and compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) to ensure safe and uninterrupted flight operations.
CAAB Member (Administration) S M Lablur Rahman said several initiatives had been introduced to ensure smooth services for Hajj pilgrims. These included waiving embarkation, passenger security and airport development fees, distributing Zamzam water, providing separate prayer facilities, safe drinking water, washrooms and hand sanitisers, supplying trolleys, chairs and queue belts, carrying out mosquito control measures and improving infrastructure. He said the initiatives had made Hajj travel safer, more organised and more comfortable.
Another presentation on air traffic operations was delivered by CAAB Member (Air Traffic Management) Air Commodore Md Noor-e-Alam, afwc, psc, ATC. He discussed air traffic control operations, airspace management, air traffic flow management, radio and navigation aids, the different categories of Instrument Landing System, aeronautical lighting, Obstacle Limitation Surfaces, airfield orientation, aircraft operations at airfields and emergency response procedures during flight operations.
Welcoming participants, Siddiq said civil aviation was a highly specialised, technical and critically important public service sector, making subject knowledge and accurate information essential for balanced and responsible reporting.
“The primary objective of this workshop is to provide journalists with practical knowledge of CAAB’s activities, airport management, air traffic management, aviation security, passenger services and other technical aspects of the aviation sector, enabling them to produce more informative and responsible reports,” he said.
He added that the media served as an important bridge between the public and state institutions and that proper verification of information, a sound understanding of technical issues and mutual cooperation were particularly important in a sensitive sector such as aviation.
Siddiq said CAAB would continue organising similar workshops on operations, safety and other key aviation topics to help journalists develop deeper practical knowledge of the industry.
Journalists attending the workshop raised questions on airport management, aviation security, air traffic operations, passenger services, international standards and other technical aspects of civil aviation. The CAAB chairman and other members of the authority responded to the questions and exchanged views on a range of contemporary issues concerning the aviation sector.
Certificates were distributed to participants at the end of the workshop. Senior CAAB officials were also present.
